On Triwinter Solstice, once a year, the great kings of the world come together to perform the ceremony of kings. They come from every corner of the world.

After the war of the Sun, eleven centuries ago, each nation signed a pact with the zodiac gods. Every year following on Triwinter Solstice the kings must perform a ceremony. They must renew their oath in blood, fire, and also give something up that they and the nation they represent hold dear. If a countries' leader, who is bound to his nation before the gods, takes no part in the ritual, the order is no more. It would then be possible for one of the leaders to gain an advantage over the other countries, due to an imbalance of power. For eleven centuries, the kings have upheld these ideals for the good of the world. But now king Tanonek of the Sitheed country craves to abolish the ways of their forefathers and bring the whole world under his rule.

But how will he do it?

There is a girl called Na. When she was eight, an immense power was awoken within her. Her power would prove useful to King Tanonek. With her, he could kill his fellow rulers one by one... if he could only find her.

Chapter 2-Big Plans

A young page came to the doorway of Suzume's room. He blinked in surprise to find the door open and a variety of people inside. "His Leige, King Tanonek IV, requests that servant Suzume and her charge meet his with his royal highness in the throneroom," He said formally. He looked around at the others. "I don't know how you two got in here," He said, referring to Nikki and Nozomi, "but I suggest you find a room and don't bother Miss Suzume or charge," He said, eyeing Na, who sat serenely on the floor, grasping Nozomi's hand, with confusion and disgust.

Nikki gave him a disalarming smile. "Don't worry! We were just visiting our new neighbors. Come on love boy," she added grabbing Nozomi's collar, and dragging him to his feet. I'm not- Nozomi began as his hand slipped from Na's. "Yeah, yeah." Nikki dragged him from the room. "It was nice meeting you two," she called to the others.

"Yeah..." Suzume watched them as they left. "What is it that his highness needs?" Suzume asked, helping Na up off of the floor. "We need to go now," She whispered quietly.

"Oh..alright," Said Na. She allowed Suzume to lead her. "I'm not very good in places I've never been.." she said uncertainly.

Suzume led Na down the stony spiral staircase of the tower. She ended up carrying poor Na on her back, the stairs varying in depth and size. Cracks had also formed from it's old age. "Dont feel bad Na," Suzume tried to comfort the girl, who seemed to notice how she was struggling downt the stairs with her added weight. "This is one of the oldest parts of the castle anyhow." When they reached the bottom of the stairs, the ground for a few yards was still the stony, unstable material. Suzume continued to carry her until they reached the smooth marble and carpet hallways. "We're supposed to meet him in the throneroom, right?" She asked, wiping a small trickle of sweat from her brow.

Na felt bad for Suzume. "I'm sorry," She said. "I didn't know it would be so rough." She said. "Yes, I believe he said the throneroom.."

"Well, let's get going, shall we?" Suzume took Na's hand. She gazed up at the tall celings, looking at the elaborate designs that covered them and seemed to leak down the walls. They were beautiful, but the whole castle seemed grayer since Tanonek had come to rule.

Tanonek sat upon his high throne, the one his father before him and his father before him had sat on. He watched Suzume lead the girl down the purple and gilt carpet.

Na' s acute ears heard every echo against the tile and stone, telling her this room was huge and elaborate. She heard the shuffle of steps, feeling the soft carpet under her bare feet. Next to her, the copper wild magic of Suzume shone, and far ahead, a body-though all she could see was the dark red soul-was waiting.

Suzume peeked up at Tanonek from under her scruffy blue bangs. She hoped that he would adress her first, as she hated speaking to him; she was terribly afraid.

"Servant Suzume." Tanonek said. "You have done well in filling out my orders; your pay will be raised as I have said. Continue to assist our guest."

Suzume nodded silently, glad that her job would continue to be on the easy side. She turned to leave.

"Girl-" Tanonek said, pointing towards Na. "-stay," He said firmly, as Na turned to follow Suzume.

"But--" Suzume began. She realized that the poor girl's reason for being in the castle was probably to serve Tanonek, and not as a guest or prisoner. Her ears swivled backward in disappointment. She had hoped she had a new friend. She listened to her footsteps on the marble floor as she walked away from the king's chamber.

King Tanonek got up from his throne, walking down to the girl sitting on the floor, her hair spread around her, fanlike. "What is your name, young one?" He asked, kneeling near her. He stared into her blank eyes, just as unsettling as the man had said.

Na shivered as she felt the dark red presence move toward her. "My name is N-Na..sir," she said quietly,

"Na." His leige repeated. "Very well, Na. I am King Tanonek II. Welcome, my dear, to Sitheed."

"But why am I here?" Na asked, "Forgive me, my leige, but what use can I be to you?"

"You are more valuble than you know, I think." The king said thoughtfully. "You are a spring of raw power, power so strong it can-and will-change this world forever." He said, his voice growing darker and slower with each word. It was evident that his words shook the girl, as her blank eyes widened. "But your grace.." Na began, but was cut off by Lord Tanonek.

"If you would but share your power for the good of my kingdom, you would have riches beyond your wildest dreams, entertainers night and day, you could even be queen!" Said the king, standing and pacing as he spoke.

"But I do not want any of these things!" Exclaimed Na, sensing a dark background to these things. "I want no part of this-this plan, or whatever you want me fo-"

At this, Tanonek grasped the girl firmly by the arms and raised her to her feet. "That, my dear, is not up to you." He said. Drawing her by the arm, he led her to the throne. Taking his scepter, he led her hand to touch the black onyx globe at the tip.

Instantly Na felt herself falling, her body was wracked with a sensation that was both burning and freezing. Just as she opened her mouth to scream, she found the sensation subsiding, and she was standing, though she knew she was no longer in the throne room. A hot breeze blew across her face.

Roseshard lamely walked through the crowd of the market. people shoved, they pushed and she felt as if they all wanted her to fall. She had been looking for Na for awhile now and she didn't have any luck. She had finally started to see what her heart always knew. No one cares about the Cladenstine. We never mattered in out land, why this one? As the lonliness in her grew she began to sob. She pulled up her robe to hide her shame.

Melchiah rubbed the sand out of his eyes as he began to wake up from his nap. He really didn't feel refreshed but he didn't feel like going back to sleep either. He decided maybe wandering around a bit might clear nis head.

"I knew you could do it," Said Tanonek's cunning voice into Na's mind. "Now be a good dear, and.." Suddenly Na realized that she grasped something cold, metallic. A horrible sensation overwhelmed her, and she fell into darkness.

"Take her to her chamber." His Leige said, and thumped his scepter twice on the carpeted floor. A single soldier came forward and lifted the fragile girl. Her hair dragged on the floor as he began to carry her away. "Oh..and send for her maidservant, Suzume. Have her cut of some of that hideous hair," The soldier obliged fearfully and made his way out of the throneroom.

Suzume, meanwhile, was in her new room, content with having finished her regular chores. She sat below the barred window, fumbling with a shiny blue gem; she handled it with utmost care, polishing it gently.

Na's door could be heard unlocking and opening. "Maidservant Suzume?" a guard called into the cavernous room.

One of Suzume's wolf ears swivled in the direction of the sound. She looked up to see the guard.  "Oh, yes?" She stood up and hid the gem behind her back. Her maidskirt was covered in straw from sitting on the floor; it was stuck in her hair as well.

CRASH! The sound of metal against stone came from within Nikki and Nozomi's room, filling their part of the their palace. "DON'T GIVE ME THAT LOOK NOZOMI!" Nikki shouted as she attemtped to untangle the sections of chain mail from each other. Nozomi glared at her, having been woken up by her noise.

"Ma'am, I've been asked to bring this girl back to her rooms. His Highness requests that you cut her hair," the soldier said formally, laying Na on a pile of straw.

"Hair?" Suzume blinked, confused as the soldier left. "But it's so pretty..." She ran her fingers though the long, soft strands. "Why does she need a hair cut? Perhaps she's hot??" Suzume grabbed a pair of shears from a small satchel in the corner of her room. She began to clip away at Na's bangs.

An hour later..
Na sat up, her fresh-cut hair cropped to her shoulders. She reached a hand up slowly to her head. "Where am I?" she asked shakily.

"In my room," Suzume said quietly from behind her, tangled up in Na's long hair. "Why did you want a haircut, Miss Na?"

"I..I didn't! Honest!" Na said, turning to face the source of Suzume's voice. There was that copper-brown magic, winding strand-like through the darkness of Na's mind. "What happened? I was with His Highness, and.."

"Waaah! I'm SOOO sorry!" Suzume yelled loudly, embarassed. "Oh, jeeze... I'm sorry, Miss Na! I had orders!" Suzume moped a bit, Na's beautiful sadly intwined in her fingers.

"D-don't feel so bad!" Na said, remourseful for complaining. "It'll grow back, I promise."

"Okay then..." Suzume still felt a little bad. "So... what did our lord want of you?" Suzume poked her face close to Na's.

Na felt Suzume's breath on her face as she tried to recall. "he..wanted..my..." she whispered, remembering slowly all that had transpired.

"He wanted..." Suzume intently listened to Na's words. Tannonek was a strange person that she knew little about. "EGGS?! He always asks me for eggs! And moo-cow milk..."

"Eh? Not eggs..he wanted my power..for something..said he'd make me queen.."

"Kuween?" The word rolled off of Suzume's tongue awkwardly. "I suppose that would be nice... but he's an ugly oldish guy..." She said sadly. "Hey, hey... do you wanna be his queen?"

"Oh no!" Na said, "I don't even want to be here! But that lecherous demon.."

"Demon?" Suzume giggled in agreement. "Hey, Na? What would you say to us getting out of here... You know, escaping?" Suzume had been wating for an opportunity to leave ever since Tanonnek came into his cruel reign.

"E-escaping!" Na said, excited. She remembered her power being sapped from her body-what had he done with it? The thought made her feel ill, "Is there such a way?"

Suzume nodded. She quickly gave a "Yup!" after realizing that Na could not see her. We'll do that tomorrow night when it's dark. So, get plenty of sleep tonight, and we'll prepare tomorrow-day!" She grinned at the thought. She knew just how they'd do that, too. Her vision shifted to the half-moon outside her barred window. The sun had set about an hour ago, before Na's hair was cut. Visions of the sun-painted hair flashed through her memory. "Cutting hair is mean..." She thought. She hated Tannonek.

Na tilted her face to the window. "Half-moon," she said quietly, "The peacock is in full view tonight,"

The next morning a messenger from the nation of Tonat arrived in Sitheed spreading the awful news. "King Najati Slain! Queen Tarna accused of the bedside murder!" He shouted these words as he paced the streets.

A dark haired boy sat on a sand dune somewhere in Tonat. "This just isnt right, is it?" The boy's long haired brother stepped up behind him. "It's outrageous."

"I dont think the queen could have done it. They had been married for years and--"

"Perhaps she just tired of him, Karasu!" The brother interrupted him.

"It's impossible. The queen had no dark aura. Something stinks about this, and it's coming from Sitheed." The boy said, standing up, his brown eyes blazing with curiosity.

"How the hell could you know?"

"Cant you tell?" Karasu smirked at his older brother as he turned and left.

At dawn, Na's hair had grown to mid-back. She stood by a window facing the east. Chapel bells were tolling all around the city, mourning King Najati's death.

Suzume awoke to the sound of the nearby bells. She yawned sleepily, removing a piece of straw from her bangs. She tottered over to Na's chamber door, and gently rapped on it with her knuckles.

Na smiled at the cheerful knock. "Come in,"

Suzume slowly slid the iron key into the lock, as she was required to lock the door--how terrible! She pushed the heavy door open. "Oh, my! Miss Na... I must be getting used to your new hair cut... I thought I cut it much much shorter..." she observed.

"Oh..you probably did," Na says, "It grows fast.."

Suzume smiled, a bit confused. "Okay then. Dont forget today's mission!"

"R-right!" Na said, unsure.

"Oh, and dont worry 'bout bringin' food or water. It's best to live off the land when you travel." Suzume said as she approached Na, "There's less stuff to carry."

Na smiled, "But I'm blind..I'd just be a burden to you,"

"You're no burden!" Suzume grinned. "Just be ready by sunset, okay?"

Nodding, Na sat down again. "I don't have anything to pack," she said.

"R-right..." Suzume became embarassed. "Well, I've got to get to my duties, or else it's no food for me!" She said, somewhat cheerfully. She suddenly realized that work was now no longer necessary, since she was planning to leave. Despite this, though, she felt compelled to do her work. It was her job, and she liked the feeling of resposibillity. She was praised for what she did, after all. What else could a lowly wolf-servant-girl do to get that response?

Na smiled. "Go on ahead. I'll be fine here..but please, if you find out why the bells are tolling, will you come tell me? I have a bad feeling.."

"Will do!" Suzume's voice was cheerful, but shared a common worry. "Take care of yourself, okay?" she said softly before slipping out the door, and quickly pattering down the stairs.

"King Najati Slain! Queen Tarna accused of the bedside murder!" The Tonatian messanger continued to solemnly belt out his monotone tune, as common village people passed in the streets, some dressed in black.

Suzume hurried down the stone roads, an order to fetch supplies from a small store. The news quickly reached her too, and she hurried back to the kingdom. She would rush through the moring work and tell Na of the misfortune at lunchtime.

Slowly Na began to plait her hair into a braid. She tried to remember how she'd gotten into this horrible mess at all. Thinking back to that day at the market, and the soft-voiced woman she'd spoken to, who hadn't acted as if she were a witch. "What happened to her..?"

About an hour later, Suzume came bounding up the stairs and crashed into Na's room clumsily, carrying some bread and a pitcher of water for her lunch. "Na!" She gasped, trying to catch her breath, "The queen of Tonat has murdered her king! It's in the news everywhere!" She hurriedly placed the loaf of bread in Na's hands. "Eat up, I think we'll be able to leave early tonight. I hate to say it, but this distraction is perfect."

The pit of Na's stomach felt ice cold. Tonat's king, dead? And last night, after..her encounter with His Leige. She smelled the bread, and remembered how hungry she was.

"Well, have you gotten your things together?" Suzume asked, tying a small brown pouch to her belt.

Na nodded. "I-I don't have any things. I didn't have a chance to pack, before I came here.." Na smiled softly at her understatement.

"Oh, right." Suzume laughed nervously, embarassed. "Well, I think we could leave now...If you're ready, of course. Tanonek's away from the kingdom for the next few days in order to bury the fallen king, so, this is most ideal for us, Na." Suzume seemed panicked and rushed, bustling about quickly, setting Na's room straight (as straight as a cell could be).

"I'm ready when you are..maybe this is a lucky break for us after all!" Na said, trying to act more cheerful, but something about the king's death loomed in the back of her brain.

Carrying Na on her back, Suzume zipped through the leafy maze that was the forest behind the courtyard garden. The heat of noon was beginning to pass and slip into the evening temperatures as the sun steadily slid through the sky. Moving silently as she did nimbly, the wolf-eared girl carried Na nearly expertly through the forest, hopping over overgrown tree roots and ducking beneath low branches. Stopping to take a break from the added weight of her passenger, Suzume braced her side against a tree and let Na slide down to the ground.

"We should be a safe distance from the kingdom before night sets in." Suzume wiped her forehead with the back of her hand, panting slightly.

2005-04-29 [Cina]: Okay, Sitheed. Do they look like native sitheeds? (tan brown skin, almond-shaped eyes?)

2005-04-29 [Thatz]: yes except their hair is light brown and their eyes are slightly less almond shaped than most natives if that makes sense...

2005-04-29 [Cina]: yeah, it does. Thanks!

2005-04-29 [Thatz]: is that ok?

2005-05-02 [Thatz]: just make something happen to a character and it shall live again!

2005-05-02 [Cina]: Well, I wanted all the characters to become introduced before I set the plot in motion. Characters need to be established still, people need to interact.

2005-05-02 [riddle_holic]: lol I'm waiting to come in latter...my guy is more of a side char

2005-05-02 [kazeumi]: hey! just cause i'm gone means it's dead? naah. lol. i'm kidding. hey, i dont get on much, remember? this is like a miracle for me!! wow! so, Cina? do you think you could have Tanonek call up a group of servants (which includes suzume) to perhaps prepare a chamber or something to do something with Na?
